Key NFL Defensive Stats

The second half of the season is a good time to apply and use our four key defensive stats when handicapping and analyzing a matchup. I’ve posted a defensive stats update and added below for you this week as teams that have the edge in 3 or 4 of the categories have a profitable profile when wagering as documented the second half of the season starting with Week 9. We mentioned and used this to identify Pittsburgh as a pick in Week 5, and the Steelers (-2.5) beat the Colts 34-22 while holding top RB Jonathan Taylor to 45 rushing yards.

Defensive stats of interest include:

– Total yards
– Yards per play
– Yards per rush
– Points allowed

As I posted in the Week 7 picks, props and parlays report, teams with the defensive stats edge in 3-4 of these stats categories
went 6-5 SU and ATS including 4-2 SU/ATS if they were better in all four categories. NFL Defensive stats and betting tipsKeep in mind and understand that one of those SU/ATS losses with the stats edge in all four categories was the Eagles, who have been hit harder more recently with injuries, started a backup quarterback and stats are trending in the wrong direction. The Dolphins were off a bye and won/covered against the Jets, who had stats edges in three categories. The 49ers were off a short week on MNF, and also battling many injuries. The situation was stronger on the Falcons, who won outright as home ‘Dog, despite the 49ers defensive edges in three categories. So situations, scheduling and SOS, injuries and of course the betting line are all part of the point spread prognosis puzzle.

I bet the Packers last night after quick review, but didn’t get this posted until Friday with extra work and research to assist you with additional information you can bet on and learn while you earn.

Teams with 3-4 defensive edges in matchups this week.

– Packers (4) vs. Panthers (Thurs)
– Jets (4) vs. Raiders
– Buccaneers (4) vs. Falcons
– Seahawks (4) vs. Bears (Mon)
– Vikings (3) at Lions
– Ravens (3) at Bills
– Jaguars (3) vs. Colts
– Steelers (3) vs. Browns
– Chiefs (3) at Broncos
– Patriots (3) at Dolphins
– Rams (3) vs. Chargers

NFL Week 8 Picks

Atlanta at Tampa Bay – Another division game and this one in the worst NFC South as the Falcons (3-4) battle the Buccaneers (2-5) with Atlanta tied for first place with the Panthers. The Buccaneers hold all the defensive edges and they piled it on the Panthers last week in a 43-13 victory with a ground-gouging 258 rushing yards as Mayfield (thumb) was eased back into the lineup with just 11 pass attempts.Tampa Bay Buccaneers Week 8 betting advice The matchups edge on defense and in the running game combined for the one-sided route. With Mayfield back at quarterback last week and overall improved play and confidence, we back the Bucs again noting Tampa Bay’s preseason offensive line ranked No. 3 by Pro Football Focus and the Falcons defensive line was last at No. 32. The Bucs now average an NFC-best 149 rushing yards per game and 4.9 yards per rush. Also, NFL weather shows widespread rain and thunderstorms likely (80%) in Tampa and also definite rain likely (90%) in Miami for the Patriots-Dolphins AFC East clash.

With the Packers win over the Panthers Thursday night to kickoff Week 8, the NFC North is now 16-3 SU vs. other divisions this season. The NFC North is also the only division in football that is profitable on the moneyline vs. other division teams over the last 3 seasons going 75-35 with a 12.7% ROI.

Matchups this week between teams with negative turnover margins include Chargers (-4) vs. Rams (-5) and Patriots (-7) vs. Dolphins (-3). Positive turnover matchups and teams include Vikings (+7, league-best) and Lions (+3) plus Raiders (+4) vs. Jets (+3) and Chiefs (+5) vs. Broncos (+4) The biggest turnover differential matchups are the Colts (-9) vs. Jaguars (+5) and the Eagles (-3) vs. Commanders (+6).

The home team in the Browns-Steelers division duel is on a 10-0 ATS run.
