Down The Stretch And Betting The 2023 Kentucky Derby

The 2023 Kentucky Derby has arrived for the first Saturday in May. The post position and odds were released Monday, and I’ve been chippin’-in coverage for a number of media outlets, companies and leading online sports betting platforms. That includes Forbes, Fanduel and affiliates, and Catena Media platforms. I’ll reference those articles in links throughout this 2022 Kentucky Derby Betting Guide, and update more as able and provided.

2023 Kentucky Derby Odds

The morning line odds were provided by the Churchill Downs on Monday. Since then, 5 horses have scratched including the favorite Forte on race day. The pari-mutuel odds will change up to Race 12 and Derby post time at 6:47 p.m. ET. There are a total of nine big stakes races on Saturday’s huge card at Churchill Downs.

Wagering on Kentucky Derby Day

The wagering handle on Derby Day and and the 2023 Kentucky Derby is expected to set another record following last year’s huge wagering day at Churchill Downs. A record $273.8 million was bet on the 14-race Derby Day card at Churchill Downs – up 9% from the 2019 previous record of $250.9 million. The all-sources handle on the 2022 Kentucky Derby also set a record.

I receive information and horse racing analysis from other leading sources and contacts, including Horse Racing Nation, Top Race Reports (ECHR/WCHR), Guaranteed Tip Sheet and FanDuel Racing/TVG, who all provide me complimentary race insights as I assist them with additional coverage in my media platforms. You can read more in many of my Kentucky Derby articles and coverage for Forbes.

I have additional gate to finish coverage for FanDuel and affiliates with full coverage including Kentucky Derby news, horse profiles and picks at The Duel Sports, along with OSGA and Catena Media affiliates like Front Page Bets and others in the Play USA Network.

Two key Kentucky Derby win contenders and picks

See other articles and links for other wagering options including exotics. I’ve also played these two and others in select head-to-head horse matchups.

Recall in last year’s 2022 Kentucky Derby, and had a small win bet on the huge longshot winner Rich Strike at 125/1 fixed odds. (He was 80/1 race day parimutuel odds). Another good score I had was in the 2017 Derby on winner Always Dreaming, along with four exacta payouts of $168 each.

As I mention in the OSGA Kentucky Derby article,  I make it clear that I am not a horse player, and I don’t study past performance charts or videos. I’m not a regular horse bettor or handicapper, but truly a periodic recreational horse player who happens to understand the betting side more than a majority fans and bettors. With my sports betting background and someone who seeks out value, my expertise in the sports betting field transfers my skills from the fields and courts to the race track.

You can bet on it.
