The Bills have won four AFC East titles and made the playoffs 6-of-7 years under head coach Sean McDermott. That includes last season when the Bills were 5-5 SU and 3-7 ATS through the first 10 games, but finished 6-1 SU (4-3 ATS) with big wins over the Cowboys and also the Chiefs during our 7-0 SU/ATS Week 14 underdog picks profit (plus a push). AFC East The Bills finished first in the AFC East and second in the conference before a 27-24 divisional playoff loss at home to the Chiefs for the second time in three seasons kept Buffalo out of the AFC Championship Game. The Bills lost to the Chiefs again despite a 37:00 to 23:00 time of possession edge, 186 rushing yards on 39 carries (both a > 75% ATS profit situation) in an overall even yardage game. Quarterback Josh Allen had the highest offensive grade among quarterbacks according to PFF (92.1), but loses leading WR Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans and No. 2 WR Gabe Davis to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills have won double-digit games in five straight seasons with Josh Allen at quarterback, but this looks like their most challenging season yet.

AFC East Bills and Jets Buffalo will begin the season having lost their entire starting secondary from 2023. They face a top-5 most difficult schedule this season after facing one of the easier schedules in 2023 with only five of their opponents going over their win totals, tied for lowest in the NFL. The Bills are also projected to face the #1 most difficult schedule of offenses and a lineup of top-10 quarterbacks, including Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Tua Tagovailoa and now Aaron Rodgers, CJ Stroud, Brock Purdy, Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. Last season, the Bills entered the season with five top-10 units (out of 7 including head coach). This year they have one (QB). The offensive line and front 7 are concerns, along with wide receiver with two key players lost. Buffalo’s offensive line allowed pressure in 2.5 seconds or less at a league-worst 45.9% rate in 3rd and long situations.

Pro Football Focus Offensive Line Rankings Entering 2024 Season (Bills No. 8, Jets No. 5)

Betting: The Bills lost 5 games as a favorite last season, and now face a much tougher schedule with 10 of their 13 key games above lined at 3-points or less ahead of the season. Underdogs are 9-1 ATS in last 10 meetings of BUF-NYJ series at New York (Week 6). Over the total is 8-1-1 in last 10 MIA-BUF matchups at Buffalo (Week 9).

Injuries: A concern for any team is injuries, especially to key players. For bettors, especially early season futures with less value, those injuries can impact bets and odds significantly while they also adjust during the season. A look at the Bills injuries in 2023 tells the significant story, and why a team poised to make the Super Bowl and get past the Chiefs failed to materialize. A late 4Q missed field goal from 44 yards was the final missed opportunity in the playoff loss to the Chiefs.

-Matt Milano (LB): Fractured leg against the Jaguars, out for the season
-Tre’Davious White (CB): Torn Achilles in Week 4 against the Dolphins, out for the season
-DaQuan Jones (DT): Torn pectoral muscle in Week 5, missed the remainder of the season
-Dawson Knox (TE): Wrist injury Week 5 in London, surgery and missed 5 games (8-12)
-Ed Oliver (DT): Toe injury, missed 3 games
-Micah Hyde (S): Neck injury, missed 2 games
-Jordan Poyer (S): Knee injury, missed 1 game
-Greg Rousseau (DE): Ankle injury, missed 2 games
-Von Miller (DE): Continued recovery from ACL injury

Stats and Notes – The Jets have missed the playoffs 13-straight years – the longest active drought in major North American professional sports. New York has the fourth-easiest strength of schedule in the league based on 2024 win totals. The Jets also have an elite-rated defense in tact that allowed just 292 yards per game last season to rank No. 2 in the league and finished top-6 by EPA for a 2nd straight season with a trio of terrific cornerbacks, and the No. 1 ranked defensive line and linebackers, according to Pro Football Focus. AFC EastQuarterback Aaron Rodgers is now 40 years old and the Jets are hoping for a return to top form off his season-ending Achilles injury early in Game 1 last season. New York also signed veteran QB Tyrod Taylor, but clearly need Rodgers to perform well and stay healthy – only nine quarterbacks started all 17 games last season. The Jets offense ranked #32 in pass efficiency, #32 on third downs, and #32 in the red zone, and finished last in the NFL in EPA per drop back last season. The offense failed to cover their weekly team total in at least 50% of their games. The Jets offense also finished 2023 with the 2nd most adjusted games lost to injury in the NFL while using a league-high nine different OL combinations and fumbling the ball the most times in the NFL (No. 22 in recovery rate). Somehow they won 7 games in 2023 while also having the worst penalty margin in the NFL. Now New York adds some solid offensive linemen through free agency and the NFL draft to shore up the front for QB Rodgers and running game for top RB Breece Hall while sporting an elite defense that held these leading QB’s below their averages last season.

– C.J. Stroud to 4.0 Yards per pass attempt – in all other games 8.4 YPA.
– Dak Prescott to 5.8 YPA – in all other games he averaged 7.7 YPA.
– Josh Allen to 5.8 YPA – in all other games he averaged 7.5 YPA.
– Jalen Hurts to 6.2 YPA – in all other games he averaged 7.3 YPA.
– Patrick Mahomes to 6.8 YPA – in all other games he averaged 7.0 YPA.

The Jets play six primetime games in the first 11 weeks of the season including two in a rare 3-games in 10 day stretch starting in Week 1 (Mon-Sun-Thurs). After opening with the 49ers, the Jets have an ideal schedule of teams to tackle in the Titans, Patriots and Broncos followed by the Vikings in London – potentially three rookie QB’s for the Jets dominant defense to destroy. New York has four top-10 units and coach Saleh built the defense into an elite unit after ranking No. 32 in points and yards allowed his first season. Still, Saleh likely needs a winning season and playoff berth to keep his job.

Betting: Incredibly, the Jets are just 38-59-2 (39%) ATS in games since 2018 and have gone under their win total in five of the last six seasons. Under coach Robert Saleh, the Jets are 18-33 SU and 20-30-1 ATS in three years. The Jets are on a 1-5 ATS run vs. the Dolphins playing in New York/Jersey (Week 18). Expectations are very high for the Jets this season, and the New York Jets-Jets-Jets are projected to be favored in 15 games this season.

You can bet on it.
