Kentucky Derby 2026 Preview, Profiles And Picks

The Kentucky Derby 2026 Run for the Roses is less than one week away at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The top 3-year-old Thoroughbreds in training who have qualified through the biggest championship series races are in the 20-horse field. The post position and morning line parimutual odds were revealed on April 25, and I’ve outlined the Kentucky Derby 2026 field with horse profiles, post positions and parimutuel odds in my Kentucky Derby coverage at Off Shore Gaming Association.

Not all sports or racing fans can bet on America’s biggest horse race, or make parimutuel wagers. That’s where select leading online sportsbooks enter the starting gate to provide bettors an opportunity to cash in. See more odds, horse profiles and additional information you can bet on below, and at OSGA.

Kentucky Derby Top Contenders

Renegade – Trained by Todd Pletcher, Renegade won the Arkansas Derby with the fastest closing furlong (11.84 seconds) of all Derby contenders, according to Equibase GPS charts. Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. is a top jockey annually, but still seeks his first win in the Kentucky Derby in this his 10th Derby start. Trainer Todd Pletcher has 8 in-the-money finishes (top 3) in the Kentucky Derby including 2 winners among 65+ starters, but none of his last 13 starters have finished in-the-money.

Chief Wallabee – The lightly-raced Bill Mott-trained colt did not race as a 2-year-old. His three starts include runner-up in the Fountain of Youth, losing by a neck to Commandment as essentially co-favorite with the winner, and 3rd in the recent Florida Derby just a half-length behind winner Commandment.

Further Ado – Jockey John Velazquez has been the winning rider in three Kentucky Derby’s most recently in 2020 aboard Authentic and my 2022 big win aboard Always Dreaming, who was trained by Todd Pletcher. He’s a most legit win contender, although I don’t care for cheating trainer Brad Cox. Further Ado‘s 106 Beyer Speed Figure from the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland is the top figure in the 2026 prep season. Yet jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. had his choice to ride Further Ado, Commandment or Renegade, and he will ride Renegade in the 2026 Kentucky Derby.

Emerging Market won the Louisiana Derby in just his second start, and is 2-for-2 in his career having never raced as a 2-year-old.

The Puma won the Tampa Bay Derby and held the lead in the stretch of the Florida Derby before Commandment came flying to nip him at the wire by a nose.

Commandment is also trained by corrupt Brad Cox. Commandment is the horse with multiple triple-digit Beyer efforts, including a 101 earned in a game win over Chief Wallabee in the Florida Derby.

Final Fractions Theory and Kentucky Derby Winners and Bets

The final fractions theory is analyzed every year by handicappers ahead of the Kentucky Derby since the points system was implemented in 2013 to determine the 20 horse field. Jennie Rees popularized this approach to handicapping the Derby, which includes horses finishing their final Derby prep race in :38 seconds or less over the final 3/8ths of a mile and the final 1/8th mile in :13 seconds or less.

There are 12 horses scheduled to run in the Kentucky Derby 2026 Run for the Roses who fit those parameters including all six of those top win contenders above.

Eleven of the last 14 Kentucky Derby winners (and 21 of the last 28) finished the final three furlongs (3/8 mile) of their final prep race in less than 38 seconds. This is a raw time, and the Final Fractions Theory does not account for pace, and does not take track conditions and biases into account. It also does not consider how much a horse is being urged to the finish. The 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan qualified in both the final 3/8 mile and final 13 seconds and won the Derby at 18/1 odds. He was retired from racing last year and won just 5 of 16 races including just one Grade 1 race – the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

Since 2000, 20 of 26 Derby winners have hit the sub-13 second mark for the final furlong, while 18 of 26 have bested the sub-38 second mark for the final three furlongs. Also, 22-of-26 Derby winners have had peak Beyer Speed Figures of at least 95 – Further Ado (106), Commandment (101,100), Chief Wallabee (100, 99), The Puma (100), So Happy (100), Renegade (98), Emerging Market (97), Potente (95).

Since 2013, the Kentucky Derby betting favorite has won 50% of the time, compared to 33% in the 12 years before the points system.

Check back for more updates, stats and any select picks and longshot options. Recall I hit the 80/1 longshot Rich Strike when he won the 2022 Kentucky Derby, but bet him fixed odds at 125/1Rich Strike moved into the race from the also-eligible list on Friday following the scratch of another horse. Rich Strike was retired from racing in 2023 and won just 2 of 14 career starts. I also went 3-0 on Derby horse matchups in 2022. Additional Derby winners in the past decade included multiple exacta payoffs with 2017 with Always Dreaming (5/1) winning and Lookin at Lee (33/1) second and Battle of Midway (40/1) third for a huge trifecta payoff. Rich Strike and Mystik Dan are the only Kentucky Derby winners since 2013 at greater than 15/1 odds. But at least one horse starting the Derby at 15/1 odds or higher has finished in the Kentucky Derby superfecta in 22 of the last 25 years (4th place or better).

Some of these Kentucky Derby 2026 runners will race in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland. I have attended and covered five Breeders’ Cup World Championships including the last two years at Del Mar. I posted some updates last year, including hitting a big Pick 5 for $5,666 on just one $16 ticket. It was triggered by a 25/1 longshot winner in Race 8, which I also included in multiple Pick 3 tickets for more exotic winners – on a budget.

As you watch and wager on horse racing and the Kentucky Derby 2026 race, don’t crap on yourself or dirty up your bankroll with too many bets that send you up the track and out of an In the Money finish. There will be other races and sports to enjoy more watch and wager action.

You can bet on it.
