SEC Sends Record 14 Teams To 2025 NCAA Tournament
The Southeastern Conference was the best in college basketball this season, and the SEC has a record 14 teams in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. That includes No. 1 seed Auburn and No. 2 Tennessee in the South and Midwest regions and No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama in the East and West regions. Many of these SEC teams are defensive dominators and top defensive teams, including Auburn, Florida and Tennessee, who all fit the profile of top 20 in both offensive and defensive efficiency ratings at KenPom. Those stats have produced 21 of the last 22 NCAA Tournament champions.

SEC Stats and Streaks
Notable streaks and stats for the top SEC teams include:
- Florida (30-4): The Gators went on an offensive onslaught starting March 1 scoring 89, 99, 90 points in their final three regular season games that included a 99-94 win at Alabama as a 3.5-point underdog. Then Florida ripped off 3-straight SEC tournament wins over Missouri, Alabama and Tennessee scoring 95, 104 and 86 points. The Gators scoring spree has moved them up to averaging 85.4 points per game; just behind nation-best Alabama (91.1) and ahead of SEC’s Kentucky, Missouri and Auburn at at 84-85 points per game. Since losing at Tennessee by 20 points on Feb. 1, the Florida Gators are a power conference-best 12-1 both straight up and against the spread (ATS) run scoring at least 79 points in every contest.
- Auburn (28-5): The Tigers held on to win the SEC regular season title and get the NCAA Tournament overall No. 1 seed despite losing three of their final four games including a home overtime loss to Alabama to close the regular season and then losing to Tennessee in the SEC tournament semifinals. Auburn fell to No. 4 in the AP Top 25 poll entering the SEC tournament behind Duke, Houston and Florida with No. 6 Tennessee and No. 7 Alabama giving the SEC strength at the top. Auburn lead college basketball with 16 Quad 1 wins this season area join Florida and Tennessee as three teams than rank top-20 in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency ratings by KenPom.
- Tennessee (27-7): After losing at Auburn 53-51 in late January in a battle of defensive dominators, the Volunteers have wins over Florida, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Alabama and road wins at Oklahoma, Texas A&M plus neutral court wins in Nashville in the SEC tournament over Texas and Auburn. Tennessee is top-10 in the country in scoring defense (63 ppg) and the Volunteers are tied for No. 1 in field goal defense allowing just 38.1% shooting.
- Alabama (25-8): The Crimson Tide boast the highest-scoring team in the country averaging 91.1 points per game. A 7-game SEC winning streak was snapped Feb. 15 in a home loss to No. 1 Auburn when Alabama was No. 2 in the country. The ‘Tide got rolled in their next game 110-98 at Missouri, and Alabama has lost at Tennessee and to Florida twice since including in the SEC tournament 104-82.
A top story of the 2025 NCAA Tournament is the SEC and 14 teams in the tournament. I’ll update more as March Madness progresses into Round of 32 and the following weekends for the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight on the way to the Final Four in San Antonio.
