Texas Golfers Leading Favorites at 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge

Following the PGA Championship in Tulsa, the Tour heads 300 miles South to Fort Worth for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge. The 77th edition of the tournament at  Colonial Country Club is the longest-running non-major on Tour contested on the same course.

I won’t spend much time on this event, but you can read some of my coverage for PlayTexas with three of the leading golfers from nearby Dallas and Plano expected to shine as leading favorites – Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris.

Here is a brief review of the course at Colonial CC.

Nicknamed ‘Hogan’s Alley’ after five-time Colonial winner Ben Hogan, Colonial Country Club is an old-fashioned style course that requires an emphasis on tee-ball and ball-striking accuracy and strategy.

The 7,209-yard par 70 is for shot shapers and shot makers. Sharp iron play and ball striking are rewarded. Putting also becomes a more important strokes gained statistic at Colonial. Golfers with the best short games have typically done well, and the list of winners at Colonial is filled with top ball strikers.

After incredibly missing out on 4-figure paydays in the outright win market at last week’s PGA Championship on Mito Pereira (200/1) and Will Zalatoris (36/1 and 41/1), I’m passing on this event to re-charge and handle other business.

We still managed a solid winning week thanks to the continued profits and more prudent bets on tournament match-ups. Tommy Fleetwood handled Gary Woodland without trouble with a strong weekend of play after getting the poor end of the weather draw Thrusday and Friday. Fleetwood shot 3-under Sunday despite four consecutive bogey’s and rallied to finish T5 in the PGA Championship for a top finishing position cash as well.

The tournament match-up record this year is now 13-6, as we conclude May. Last year, we were 17-5 on tournament match-ups through May before our Swing and Shots started finding the Rough.
