Following the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, the fourth and final major of the year is next month at Royal Troon on the west coast of Scotland adjacent to the Firth of Clyde. Open Winners Position After 18 And 36 Holes
Ten different players have won the British Open since 2013 including five American’s. Eight of the ten golfers were in the top-10 after Round 1 (six in top-5) with Stenson T12 on his way to winning. Francesco Molinari was the furthest back after the opening round tied for 19th. Eight of the last 10 winners were also in the top-5 through 36 holes before winning.
Royal Troon Course Guide And Hole Descriptions
The Troon scorecard shows the Par 5 at No. 6 will play to an Open Championship record-length of 622 yards. The Par 3 at No. 8 features the shortest hole played at an Open. The “Postage Stamp” measures just 123 yards, and could play to 99 yards with a front tee and pin.
The back nine will often play into the prevailing wind, and all six of the Par-4’s play to at least 450 yards. The Par 4 at No. 11 “The Railway” will play as the toughest hole on the course with the out-of-bounds railway line running tight along the right-hand side.
Fairway bunkers are among the course’s biggest defense around the landing area. Strategy and accuracy off the tee is demanded, and the greens at Troon are among the smallest at an Open course venue.
The Data Golf course fit tool for Royal Troon favors strong approach play with creative ball striking, accuracy, ball flight control and short game skills more precise and especially in windy conditions. Those golf stats and play helped Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton and Sergio Garcia finish top-5 in the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon.
Since 2000, there have been four playoffs at the Open. The most recent occurred in 2015 at the iconic Old Course at St Andrews when Zach Johnson defeated Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman to claim his second career major title. The 2009 Open Championship had a spectacular storyline with 59-year-old Tom Watson mounting a sensational challenge for glory in pursuit of his sixth Open title 26 years after winning his fifth. Watson couldn’t save par on the 72nd hole and lost in a 4-hole aggregate playoff to winner Stewart Cink.
The last six Open Championship winners and Champion Golfer of the Year since Stenson’s win at Troon in 2016 are Brian Harman (2023), Cameron Smith, Shane Lowry, Francesco Molinary and Jordan Spieth.
The 2025 Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, where Shane Lowry won and hoisted the Claret Jug in 2019.
