South Point
South Point Race and Sports Book
Seats: Approximately 180 seats in the horse racing area and over 150 seats in the sports area. Additional lounge seating (100+) is available in the adjacent Del Mar Lounge.
Screens Multiple flat screens in the sports book and Del Mar Lounge (approximately 80 combined). The horse racing area has over 30 screens as well as individual monitors.
The South Point is located on the southern end of Las Vegas Boulevard, about a 10-minute drive from Mandalay Bay. The South Point is very popular with locals and has grown a following amongst Vegas visitors due to its laid back atmosphere away from the craziness of the strip, room rates that won’t break the bank (the rooms at this property are spacious), and the food and drink specials within the resort (for example, $2 happy hour margaritas at Baja Miguel’s and $2 well drinks and domestic beer at casino bars). There is a shuttle service that runs hourly to and from the strip, which at $8, is much cheaper than a cab.
The South Point certainly hits the mark in terms of its race and sports book offerings. The race and sports book is divided into two completely separate areas, one for sports and the other exclusively for horse racing. Both areas are spacious, and combined provides for one of the larger race and sports books in all of Las Vegas. The Del Mar Lounge, connected to the sports book, is an excellent place to relax with friends – not a bad seat in the house and plenty of screens to enjoy the sports action.
Comp Drinks
The drink coupon system is used for comp refreshments. These aren’t too hard to come by as most of the time, drink tickets will be offered to you while you are making a bet. If not, politely ask, and you should have no problem scoring a drink coupon or two. The drink coupons are good at several of the casino bars.
Food
The Del Mar Deli, located directly adjacent to the sport book, offers an array of deli style foods: pizza, sandwiches, soups, etc. All of the food offerings are priced right and the lines move quickly and this is a good spot to grab a quick bite while watching the game. There is also a hot dog cart offering up 75-cent hot dogs that are pretty tasty. The Steak and Shake burger chain opened up a restaurant here recently, which is also very popular.
Odds and Ends
For most of the year, this sports book is open 24 hours. So if you are inclined to make that sports bet as you’re are headed out of town, or are against the clock to lay some money down before kickoff, the South Point is a good option whether you are headed out of town or just arriving. A friend of mine actually stops at the South Point as he’s driving into town and makes several sports wagers. His reasoning is that if he hits some winners, the money will be waiting for him as he drives out of town. Better than blowing the sports book winnings at the blackjack table I suppose.
The South Point sports book staff is very friendly, food options are plentiful, comp drinks are easy to come by, and ample seating is available. All of these ingredients lead to a top rating. The South Point sports book is one of the best in Las Vegas.
