Record NBA Scoring Opening Week

Bookmaking, Betting and NBA Totals and Scoring Surges to Start Season

What’s going on in the opening week of pro basketball? Bookmakers are scrambling as scoring surges to record levels averaging 220.9 points per game through 46 games with 29 OVERS and 17 UNDERS for a 63% Over the Total clip. And 20 of those games went OVER the total by at least 10 points and 11 others by at least 20 points even with the bookmaker adjustment upward from the opening numbers.

According to Bet Labs and its proprietary sports betting information and database, OVERS in the month of October have been profitable only four times in the past 11 years

Here is my article at TheLines with other details explaining the scoring increase, rule changes, pace of play and possessions per game along with bookmaker, betting lines and adjustments.

How does nearly 221 points per game this early season compare to full seasons past?  Points per game (PPG) per season.

99 PPG: 2005-2015

103 PPG: 2016-2017

106 PPG: 2017-2018

221 PPG: 2018-2019 opening week

Rule changes including shot clot reset are impacting play, pace and tighter calls are resulting in more fouls and free throws. More freedom of movement and increased scoring is what the NBA wants in hopes of providing a more entertaining brand of basketball. Perhaps it’s being overdone in the early season, but scoring is surging and record scoring is inevitable.
