The Memphis Grizzlies ( 10-11 SU, 7-13-1 ATS ) travel to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans ( 10-10 SU, 8-11-1 ATS ) on Friday the 13th for an 8:00 ET tipoff. These teams are battling at the bottom of the Southwest division and the Grizzlies are tied for the fewest profit-producing wins in the NBA ( 7 ATS ). Both team have personnel problems with star players out of the lineup with injuries, as New Orleans forward and leading rebounder Anthony Davis has been out since December 2 with a fractured hand and Grizzlies center Marc Gasol has a MCL strain suffered November 22nd and is out indefinitely.
Memphis is off a 6-game home stand in which they went 2-4 SU/ATS. The Grizzlies have not played away from home since November 27th, and surprisingly they have won 5-straight road games. But that was with Gasol in the lineup, and now this team is a struggling, dysfunctional offense and since Gasol’s been out they have scored 88 or less points in four of their eight games. Five of those eight games have gone under the total with no total lined higher than 194′. This is a banged-up and shorthanded team and now key reserve forward Quincy Pondexter is out for the season with a stress fracture in his foot. He scored 22 and 15 points in recent low-scoring losses to the Clippers and Nets. Memphis was embarrassed by this New Orleans team 99-84 as a 7-point home favorite on November 6th. Memphis has become the slowed-paced team in the league and can’t be counted on for offensive efficiency with lack of ball movement and personnel problems.
New Orleans concludes a four-game home stand tonight before taking to the West coast for five road games. Both teams are in the bottom half of the league in effective FG% shooting and we expect a strong effort by the Pelicans on defense against a team lacking shooters and scorers. Center Jason Smith has been stronger on the boards his last four games including a career-high 16 rebounds in the Pelicans overtime win at Detroit last game December 11. Al-Farouq Aminu can also help contain Randolph inside as he’s recorded 14-10-20 and 9 rebounds his last nine games. Memphis will start three players averaging less than 8 PPG with PG Mike Conley ( 17 PPG ) and power forward Zac Randolph ( 16 PPG ) expected to carry the scoring load. That’s not enough even against a sub-par Pelican’s defense who we expect to be bring their best on defense against a slow-moving Grizzlies team. Look for the Pelicans to grind out a lower-scoring victory.
