This game features a pair of defensive dominators and the betting action is nearly even on each team.  There are currently less than 15 teams in the nation who meet the defensive criteria as follows:

.         Allow less than 20 points per game (ppg)

·         Allow less than 350 yards per game (ypg)

·         Allow less than 4.9 yards per play (yppl)

·         Allow less than 200 rushing yards per game (rypg)

·         Allow less than 200 passing yards per game (pypg)

Wisconsin (5-2 SU / 6-0-1 or 6-1 ATS) and Iowa (5-3 SU / 5-3 ATS) both qualify defensively, and we start with that premise in supporting an underdog in this price range. For over a decade, a proven profile in handicapping college football underdogs of more than 6 points is to identify if the opponent will score at least 28 points against our underdog. If they fail to reach that point production, our underdog will cover the point spread over 80% of the time.  That’s a solid base premise in your handicapping when starting with a strong defense taking back at least a touchdown in the betting line, and a solid indicator for FairwayJay’s free college football selection Nov. 2 this week.

iowaThe Badgers have the stronger and more balanced offense averaging at least 220 ypg both rushing and passing in league games. They rank #11 in the nation in total offense, and Wisconsin also enters this rivalry game off a bye while Iowa won in overtime on this field last week, 17-10 over Northwestern. Both teams and coaches are fundamental at the point of attack, as each likes to use the power running game and play action while controlling the ball, clock and chains. Both defenses rely more on zone to minimize big plays and force opponents to sustain drives and move the length of the field to score.  Each team features strong play at linebacker and Iowa’s defensive front and top trio of tacklers is the best Bucky Badger has faced this season.  Iowa has already played against the nation’s top defense of Michigan State, a game in which the Hawkeye’s lost at home. Recall that Iowa was a -1.5-point favorite vs. Michigan State, and now they are nearly a double-digit home underdog to Wisconsin…hu?  Clearly Bucky’s bye along with recent bashing of Illinois and Northwestern has played into this line, but you can always count on consistency when you have a strong defense and we expect that again Saturday in this rivalry with the winner taking home the Heartland Trophy.

Wisconsin has faced many teams with spread offenses this season, but that won’t be the case against Iowa. Both teams will lineup and try to run the ball into the strength of the opponent. The Hawkeye’s three losses this season are against teams with a combined record of 23-1. The Badgers are playing their first game before 7:00 pm since week 2 and their first early start on the road.   You can watch and win as ABC covers this Big Ten battle and I expect a lower-scoring game, and thus FairwayJay’s free college football selection Nov. 2 says the generous points are worth taking.
