College Football Handicapping – Who Are The Legit National Title Favorites?
I’ve been writing and providing analysis on college football teams and national title hopefuls for the past month for various sports betting sites. Many prognosticators and media members focus on the favorites, but which teams are the legitimate contenders to reach the playoffs and win the national title? Many of the favorites have season over/under win totals which are a much better wager since you can’t bet these teams NOT to win the national title or their respective conferences. Also, when you see a key injury that ends a players season like Ohio State QB Braxton Miller, you turn an already questionable wager on a big favorite into a bad bet if you wagered in the futures market too early.
Plenty of headlines ahead as the favorites garner a majority of the attention and coverage in their pursuit of a playoff position and shot at the national title. Read some of my analysis in the links below on this year’s National Title favorites along with my thoughts on a few teams worth wagering on and against.
One team I have bet against this season is Auburn, who had a remarkable run and extremely good fortune in reaching last years title game. I bet under the Tigers season win total of 9 games and expect a big drop from last season as Auburn also plays a very tough schedule with many difficult road games. No way Auburn wins the national title and the Tigers are a bad bet to do so at 21-1.
One favorite I like to reach the 4-team playoff and have a solid shot at the national title is Oregon. who looks to prove the polls right as one of this years national title favorites. The Ducks play in the toughest conference in football this season, in my humble opinion, as the Pac-12 has 5 of the top-15 offenses and defenses in the country this year. While a key early-season home game vs. Michigan State and road game at UCLA will be challenging, the Ducks are loaded with their explosive, awesome offense. Oregon dominated the tough Pac-12 last year with +138 yards-per-game differential. They avoid USC, Arizona State and Arizona, who upset Oregon last year, and even with 1-loss I see the Ducks making the 4-team playoff and one of the better bets among this year’s group of national title favorites. Oregon has proven they belong in any conversation of elite teams in college football, as the Ducks have gone 57-9 the past five seasons including a National Title game appearances in 2010. A breakthrough season into the new 4-team playoff is in the forecast and Oregon is a legit national title favorite.
