The Dolphins are a legit AFC East contender this season, but looked the part early last year too starting 5-1. Miami averaged a league-high 37.1 points and 499 yards per game after the season’s first six games which included the 70-20 blowout of the Broncos gaining 726 yards. But Miami closed the season 2-4 while averaging 339 yards per game, and the Dolphins went just 1-6 SU/ATS against the seven playoff teams they faced, while being outscored 96-42 in the second half of those games. Miami Dolphins AFC East preview picksMiami did have injury issues along the OL and lost their two top pass rushers and key CB and safety and then were very shorthanded in the playoff loss to the Chiefs. The Dolphins have 114 sacks over the last 3 years – tops in the NFL. The Dolphins will face 10 teams that finished over .500 in 2023. Nine of those are projected to do the same this year. The Dolphins skill position players at WR and RB along with the defensive secondary rank among the best in the league, and the Dolphins will continue to run a high-rate of pre-snap motion. But the offensive line and defensive front seven are in the lower quartile of the league and need to improve to make the playoffs again and get their first playoff win in 24 years. Up to seven new defensive starters and a new defensive coordinator from the Ravens (Anthony Weaver) is something to watch early season with higher-scoring games more likely but also some of the highest posted totals ahead of the season. Quarterback Tua can pile up big numbers again if he and the OL stays healthy and delivers quick, timely passes like last year that led to 69% completions, 29 TD passes and league-high 4,624 passing yards.

Betting: The Dolphins open the season at home in Week 1 against in-state Jacksonville with a high game total of 49 points. The MIA-JAC games have gone Under the total in 8 of the last 9 meetings. Miami is on a 7-0 ATS run vs. New England (Week 5, 12). The Over is 8-1-1 in the last 10 MIA-BUF matchups at Buffalo.

LB Matthew Judon – O/U 10.5 Sacks

Stats and Notes – A new era in Foxborough begins with Bill Belichick no longer head coach of New England. Expect lots of losing with HC Jarod Mayo and 17 new coaches on his staff. The Patriots defense kept the team competitive last season, despite by the adjusted games lost metric being the most injured team in the NFL on defense and the third most injured team on offense. New England Patriots AFC EAst preview picksThe Patriots face one of the most difficult schedules in 2024 and the toughest opening six games including a brutal opening stretch of three road games in their first four contests at Cincinnati, New York Jets and San Francisco with the Jets and 49ers games likely to close with lower game totals. Home games vs. the Dolphins and Texans followed by a game in London vs. Jacksonville and no bye returning home to play the Jets. The Patriots could be winless into November unless they can steal a home win against Seattle in Week 2. Brissett won’t be the only temporary bridge at quarterback playing behind a mess along the offensive line and limited WR talent with last year’s offense No. 32 in the league in points per drive, 3-and-out rate, turnover EPA and worst-rate to reach the red zone. I anticipate head coach Mayo potentially a one-and-done coach and only extreme patience by owner Robert Kraft keeps the former Patriots player as head coach beyond 2026.

Betting: The Patriots are expected to be underdogs in all 17 games this season. The Patriots Week 3 road game against the Jets is a Thursday night contest. Rookie head coaches on Thursday Night Football for the first time in the first half of the season are just 5-18 ATS since 2000. The Patriots are just 1-10 ATS as an underdog of 3 points or less since 2021. Last year, a staggering 42% of NFL regular season games of the season (114 of 273) were decided by 6-points or fewer, the most since the league expanded to 32 teams in 2002. The Patriots were involved in NFL-high 11 of those contests. The Patriots are just 2-9-1 ATS when traveling to Miami (Week 12). By then, the Patriots may have turned to rookie 1st round QB Drake Maye under new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. But 31-year-old Jacoby Brissett will start the season at quarterback for his fifth team and second stint for New England after former first round pick QB Mac Jones was dealt to Jacksonville. What a mess for coach Mayo, and a slow start as expected for the Patriots will only inflate the betting lines with those home games vs. the Dolphins, Jets and Texans all rising above 4.5 points. Not sure even I will be able to stomach taking the big home ‘Dog Patriots with our proven, winning NFL underdog picks that went 11-1 ATS with 9 outright winners in December 2023.

You can bet on it.
