4 College Conference Tournaments Drive Money And Fans Through Las Vegas
College basketball fans are flocking into Las Vegas a week before the NCAA Tournament begins as the entertainment capital of the world host four college conference basketball tournaments again this year. The Orleans Arena is host to the West Coast Conference tournament which has annual contenders Gonzaga and St. Mary’s playing in the tournament championship game March 8. The Mountain West Conference tournament tips off March 9 at the Thomas and Mack Center along with the Pac-12 tournament at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with plenty of storylines and things to watch as the Pac-12 tournment tips. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament tips off March 10 at the Orleans Arena, and plenty of tournament previews, awards and info to review.
Las Vegas continue to be a big draw for college basketball, as the tournaments drive money and fans through Las Vegas. On Tuesday, the Pac-12 conference announced the entire four-day tournament is sold out for the first time in league history. But the Pac-12 is considering moving its event to the new T-Mobile Arena, which opens April 6, 2016 with crews putting the finishing touches on the Las Vegas Strip’s newest arena. The 20,000 seat T-Mobile arena is expected to draw thousands of new visitors to Las Vegas.
But not all is well on the conference tournament front as the Mountain West president’s recent cost-saving move to reduce the number of teams playing in the conference tournament from 11 to 8 was met with great objection and dismay by the conference coaches.
