How To Understand Golf Betting Statistics And Strokes Gained

Over the past decade, winners of the Sony Open at the 7,044-yard Par 70 Waialae CC have gained more than 40% of their strokes Putting – among the top-5 highest rates of any PGA Tour course in that stretch. Waialae CC features much larger than average Bermuda greens.

Consistent contenders will excel in Approach play from 125-200 yards and these additional strokes gained (SG) and statistical categories.

  • Driving Accuracy / SG: OTT (<7,200 Yard Courses)
  • Greens In Regulation Gained
  • Birdies or Better Gained
  • Par-4 Scoring: 400-500
  • SG: Around the Green
  • SG: Putting (Bermuda)

Sony Open 2026 Picks

Fairway’s Favorites: Henley, Conners, Hall, Echavarria
Fairway’s Longshots: Harman, Li, Eckroat, Nakajima

Tournament Matchups: Harry Hall  (-120) over Spieth

I’m high on Harry Hall this week. Other players analysis.

Russell Henley is the favorite to win the 2026 Sony Open. He’s the one player of the last 20 who won on his rookie season in 2013. Henley has since finished top-11 in four of the past five years at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Canadian Corey Conners is accurate from the tee, solid iron player and has shown strength at Waialae with four top 12 finishes in seven starts.

Englishman Harry Hall has great hands and skills with a solid short game, ball striking, around the green and putting strength. He turned up his game further after finishing T10 at the Sony Open last year.

Columbian Nico Echavarria had a breakout year in 2025 that included a runner-up finish in the Sony Open after losing in a playoff to Canadian Nick Taylor.

Brian Harman is a British Open major champion who excels on shorter courses and plays well in the wind. He ranks among the leaders in this field on par 70 courses, and finished 4th in 2018 after leading through 36 holes, a pair of top 25’s the last two years and six straight made cuts at the Sony Open. Harman has been playing through the late fall and end of 2025, and has an edge in playing with his iron play in good form.

Longshot Austin Eckroat did not meet expectations last season, but he’s among the most accurate off the tee (top 30 in 2025) and fired a 63 in the November RMS Classic on a similar shorter coastal course with bermuda greens. Eckroat finished 12th at the Sony Open on debut in 2023, and he led halfway through 36 holes in 2024 before falling back to finish outside the top 30.

A rookie to watch this year on the PGA Tour is Keita Nakajima. He arrives from the DP World Tour, and finished 2nd playing alongside winner Tommy Fleetwood in Delhi last October on a similar tight course. Nakajimi is accurate and was 5th here through 36 holes four years ago as an amateur, and played well in his second visit to Waialae.

Another longshot to watch is Haotong Li (+9000), who can be played in additional top 20, 30 or top 40 markets with other big longshots of interest. Li had 9 top 20’s on the DP World Tour last year and the Chinese star is supremely consistent with his irons, an exceptional putter and can play well in the wind. He finished top 5 in the Open Championship last year against a much stronger field.

Next week it’s The American Express in La Quinta, CA, where we cashed in a tournament matchup winner last year on Greyserman (top 10) over Clark (cut). In 2024 it was a big ‘Dog tournament matchup winner on Cantlay over Scheffler, and favorite matchup on Eric Cole. In 2023 it was a Round 1 winner on Cameron Young on our only posted play. We also cashed a tournament matchup winner on Doug Ghim over Andrew Landry (cut) in the 2022 American Express tournament.
