Evaluating NBA betting and Series Prices – Conference Semifinals

The NBA playoffs have moved into the conference semifinals and some solid NBA betting situations will unfold in the later rounds; especially with Class A teams meeting.  Those include the #2 seed Oklahoma City Thunder vs. #3 seed LA Clippers and #1 San Antonio Spurs vs. #5 Portland Trailblazers in the Western Conference.  These teams won 59, 57, 62 and 54 games during the regular season.  In the weaker Eastern conference, no class A match-ups yet, as #1 seed Indiana Pacers play #5 Washington Wizards and #2 seed Miami Heat battle the #6 Brooklyn Nets.

Here are the adjusted series prices provided by the LVH Superbook in Las Vegas prior to the start of the semifinals.

Pacers -180 vs Wizards +160

Thunder -200 vs Clippers +175

Heat -550 vs Nets +425

Spurs -360 vs Blazers +300

And here is the updated championship odds to win the NBA title

Heat 3/2                         Pacers 14/1

Spurs 5/2                       Nets 25/1

Thunder 4/1                  Trail Blazers 25/1

Clippers 7/1                   Wizards 30/1

I think the Trailblazers are the value play to win the NBA championship

Round 1 home favorites destroyed their betting backers going 13-23 ATS.  Over the total bettors were rewarded going 25-10-1.  The story of round 1 was 8 overtime games, and the most overtime games combined in all playoff games for one season is 10.

Regarding the match-ups and situations in the semifinal rounds, there is some strong support on home favorites in this round as the past 10 years have seen home favorites win > 57% ATS.  Don’t tell Oklahoma City or Indiana bettors, as those two home favorites fell hard in defeat in Game 1.  Yet some solid situations will present themselves in this round and the next two rounds as Class A teams meet.  We’ll continue to evaluate the match-ups and adjustments including in the betting line to position us for point spread profit.  Hopefully the whistles and refs won’t hurt our point spread prognosis too much!
