I chip-in more coverage including dark horses to watch and wager on for The Duel Sports. Take a look at my insight and info on Denny McCarthy, Harold Varner III and Callum Tarren.
Denny McCarthy is one of the very elite putters on Tour, and best in this field. He’s also one of the most accurate from the tee. The 29-year-old East Coast native is having his finest year on Tour, and playing some of his best golf recently. McCarthy’s short game, putting and approach stats all rank top-10 in this field when playing Sedgefield, and his last three appearances have produced a T-22, T-9 and T-15 finish while shooting all 12 rounds under par. Invest in this short-hitting riser who is on a roll with three top-7 finishes in his last five tournaments.
Last week we had the outright winner and small pizza bet on Tony Finau, and he won his second straight start at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. We passed on tournament match-ups, and enter the Wyndham Championship 18-9 this year on posted tournament match-ups.
Low scoring in play again this week at the 7,131 yard par 70 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. Accuracy from the tee, strong approach play and making lots of putts is in order to contend with those dialed in on shorter irons and success. Eight par 4s from 400-450 yards set players up for scoring success.
Kevin Kisner won a 6-man playoff last year with a -15 under par total score of 265, and the winning scores in previous years were lower. Webb Simpson has finished top-3 or better in four of the last five years at Sedgefield along with a T-7 last year. He also won the event in 2011 and has been the most dominant player over the history of the event played at Sedgefield CC.
KEY STATS
Since 2010, the average strokes gained approach ranking of the Wyndham winner is 6.2, and six of the last nine winners ranked fourth or better on approach. Kisner averaged 3.9 strokes on approach last year but was among the very best in the field in SG: Total at 10.3. He was strongest in Tee-to-Green, which is a golf stats of significance this week along with putting on bermuda. Also add par-4 scoring and proximity from 150-175 to your research and stats models.
As you watch and wager and consider your pre-tournament strategies and live in-play options. Know too that first-time winners have won the Wyndham seven of the last 15 years.
