Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 Odds And Picks In Detroit

A late start on the handicapping, but I’ve chipped in some picks below and a Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 preview with player profiles for FanDuel at The Duel Sports. That includes on the favorites and top ranked player in the field Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris, PGA Tour Rookie of the Year frontrunner Cameron Young, Tony Finau and many others including dark horses.

I also chip-in a tournament preview at Forbes with odds, sportsbook betting data from Caesars and an update on the FedEx Cup Playoffs points changes.

Following the 3M Open and another tournament match-up winner, we now push towards the playoffs with a posted tournament match-up record of 18-9 this year.

Low scoring expected again on the 7,370 par 72 at Detroit Country Club. The winning scores the first three years have been -26 (263), -24 (265) and -18 (270). The over/under winning score this year is 267.5.

Last year we had Joaquin Niemann at +2400 to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and it looked like he was going to get the victory. On to sudden death, and we come up just short (again).

Fairway’s Longshots: Mark Hubbard, Chesson Hadley, Greyson Sigg, Chase Seiffert

Tournament Match-ups: Pass this week (18-9 YTD)

I’ll look into some single round match-ups to post or Tweet over the weekend.

Mark Hubbard is a legit top-10 (+650) candidate this week who ranks No. 4 in this field in Strokes Gained: Total over his last 36 rounds. That includes top-10 in Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking and Approach, along with top-15 in Putting. The 33-year-old very short-hitting pro has been flying under the radar, but he’s playing his best golf with a pair of top-5 finishes his last two PGA Tour starts along with a top-15 this month. Hubbard finished T-12 here in 2020, but was right in contention for his first PGA Tour win until a final round 72 dropped him back. He’s playing much better now and his putter has provided six straight events since May of positive strokes gained stats.

Tony Finau is up to No. 16 in the world golf rankings, and his win last week moved him from No. 30 to No. 17 in the FedEx Cup Standings. Over his last 36 rounds, Finau leads this field in a number of Strokes Gained categories including Total (1), Tee-to-Green (1), Ball Striking (1), Off-the-Tee (1) and top-10 in Short Game, Around-the-Green and also Good Drives Gained. Using 6-7 other Donald Ross-designed comp courses, Finau ranks top-10 in this field in performance on those courses. Finau would appear to be a threat to win again this week, and his odds are a little better than last week. But Finau to finish top-20 (-120) is a preferred play.

Next week it’s the final tournament ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield CC in Greensboro, NC begins Aug. 4 and we’ll return with tournament match-ups you can bet on.
