College Football Scoring – Mountain West Shootout

Fresno State at Wyoming college football scoring total has hit 80 points in projected Mountain West shootout

The Fresno State Bulldogs ( 7-0 SU, 2-5 ATS ) visit Laramie, WY to tackle the Wyoming Cowboys ( 4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) on Saturday, November 9, 2013.  This Mountain West game features the undefeated Bulldogs ranked #16 and pushing towards a BCS bowl game. Watch and win on ESPN2 Saturday night as the Bulldogs and Cowboys pile up the points in a Mountain West shootout. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:15pm ET from War Memorial Stadium.

Wyoming and Fresno State rank 2-3 in conference scoring with both teams averaging 40 ppg. Both teams are top-10 nationally in offense averaging over 515 ypg in all games. Wyoming leads the Mountain West Conference averaging 542 ypg and 7.0 yards per play in four league games while Fresno State rolls up 536 ypg.  The Cowboys defense has been dreadful allowing 39 ppg in league play following their 51-44 last-second loss last game at San Jose State; a game in which the Cowboys led early 16-0. So Cowboys head coach Dave Christensen had seen enough defensive deficiencies and fired Wyoming’s defensive coordinator during the bye week.

Fresno State has the third-longest regular season winning streak in the nation at 13 games. Last year the Bulldogs beat the Cowboys 42-14 in Fresno, CA. This year they play a Saturday night game with temps dipping below 40 degrees in Laramie.  Yet we can still project both teams to pile up points in what could be the highest scoring game of the season in Mountain West play.  Wyoming’s offense is strong and balanced averaging 258 rushing ypg and league high 6.1 ypg. The Cowboys pass for 284 ypg, making them a dangerous big dog at home with a potent, powerful balanced offense. In their recent loss to San Jose State, the Cowboys rushed for 322 yards.

Fresno State does lead the league with 19 sacks in five league games while Wyoming has just four sacks in four games. The Cowboys run defense is a disaster allowing 263 rushing ypg and their pass defensive efficiency is the league’s worst. This really sets up for two top QBs to put on an aerial show, as Wyoming’s Brett Smith is passing for 296 ypg and #2 in the league in pass efficiency. The Cowboys convert 54% on third down and have 16 TD’s in 18 red zone trips. But Fresno State QB Derek Carr is passing for 396 ypg with a trio of receivers averaging over six catches per game led by league-leader Davonte Adams with nine receptions per game.

Despite being 8-0 SU, Fresno State is 1-4 ATS in league games and it took overtime to cover a closing line of -6.5 in Fresno State’s last road game at San Diego State. Note that the Bulldogs were out-gained that game 507-341 and QB Carr put the ball in the air 57 times for less than 300 yards passing. Wyoming’s situational advantage is that they had a bye last week and will hold nothing back as they push for bowl eligibility.  At 4-4, they need two more wins but have tough road games ahead at Boise State and Utah State. Tough trip to altitude for Fresno State, and they’ll have a focused Cowboys team waiting for redemption with a huge effort expected by Wyoming in this Mountain West shootout.

Fresno State is 0-3 all-time at Wyoming. The Cowboys are 1-8 ATS their last nine home games vs. a team with a winning record. Yet the over is 7-2 in the Cowboys last nine home games vs. a team with a winning and 4-1 over in the Cowboys last five games.  In both Wyoming’s games this season in which they were installed as underdog, each had over 70 points scored and Wyoming covered both games. Look for a Mountain West shootout Saturday night.
