The biggest days at the races are the weekends, where the top tracks in America host the biggest stakes races. The Triple Crown races draw tremendous interest from fans, media and horse handicappers and bettors. From the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs to the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, there is plenty of additional racing that draws interest and betting from many of the top tracks listed below.
Each year culminates with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships the first weekend in November. - Gulfstream Park has a mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool Saturday. The pool may reach $5 million.
- Big stakes races Saturday includes the $300k Ogden Phillps (G1) at Belmont. Just six runners in the 1 1/6 mile race for fillies and mares. However, the $100k Louisville (G3) at Churchill Downs drew 12 runners on the turf for the marathon 1 1/2 mile test.
- Steve Asmussen became Churchill Down’s all-time leading trainer Friday with his 738th win, passing Dale Romans.
- The Belmont Stakes is Sat., June 20, and the Triple Crown race is also a Road to the Kentucky Derby series addition with the top-4 finishers receiving 150-60-30-15 points towards qualifying for the Kentucky Derby. Last Saturday, Honor A.P. secured his spot in the starting gate for the rescheduled Kentucky Derby Sept. 5 with an impressive stretch run to capture the Santa Anita Derby, which Vegas Sports Zone’s Sr. Sports Analyst FairwayJay covered in Forbes.
