The 2023 NFL Week 16 lookahead lines provide us an advance look at the following week’s NFL lines before the current week’s games are played. I provide an explanation and tools for using lookahead lines below, and more information at OSGA. As you review my Week 15 underdog picks, which are now 25-24 ATS following a huge Week 14 result when we went 7-0 ATS with 7 outright winners, take a glance at the Week 16 matchups and lookahead lines before they are posted for next week’s games. Then compare them to the actual lines following the Week 15 games.

NFL 2023 Week 8These NFL Lookahead Lines or advance lines can be useful in not only projecting ahead to next week’s games and lines, but also to keep you from over-reacting to one game or the upcoming games results. That’s especially the case with game totals that are averaging just over 43 points per game.

Prime Time NFL Totals

But prime time NFL football fans have been over-reacting recently to the lack of scoring in the night games on Thursday, Sunday and Monday night. The lower posted totals in many games saw higher scores and resulted in a 2-1 over/under mark in Week 14, and 3-0 in Week 13. Then the Week 15 Thursday night game more than doubled the total in the Raider’s 63-21 crushing of the Los Angeles Chargers. NFL prime time unders are now 30-17 not including Thanksgiving (17 overs and 30 unders). That includes 14-4 on Monday Night Football, with the last three MNF contests all going ‘over’ the game total.

There are three MNF games in Week 16 on Chrismas Day and those are the final MNF games of the season with none scheduled in Weeks 17 or 18.

Week 15 Market Moves and Adjustments

Some notable line adjustments include the Jets from a 13-point underdog on the Week 15 lookahead lines, and now +8.5 at Miami. The Jets Week 14 win combined with the Dolphins Monday Night Football loss and collapse in the final 4 minutes to blow a 14-point lead to the Titans has the leading online sportsbooks making a big odds adjustments. The Titans big upset win has resulted in Tennessee going from +3.5 home ‘Dog to -2.5 point favorite vs. the Houston Texans. The Raiders went from +3.5 to -3 in their Thursday Night Football division duel against the LA Chargers with QB Justin Herbert ruled out following a finger injury last week and surgery. The Bengals went from Pk/+1 to -3 vs. the Vikings following another strong performance from QB Jake Browning ina 34-14 victory over the Colts, and the Vikings ugly 3-0 road win over the Raiders. The Jaguars are down from +5.5 home ‘Dog to +3.5 and now more +3’s vs. the Ravens on Sunday Night Football.

NFL Week 16 Lookahead Lines

Week 16 look ahead lines include four division games as teams push towards the playoffs. That includes one between winning teams with the Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings. The Sunday schedule is Christmas eve, and a triple header on Monday Night Football on Christmas day features a potential Super Bowl preview between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, who are both No. 1 seeds if the playoffs started ahead of Week 15.

The NFL can flex an unlimited number of times for “Monday Night Football” between Weeks 12 and 17, and must give 12 days notice. It starts for the first time in Week 15 with Philadelphia at Seattle, and the Eagles will play a second straight game on Monday Night Football in Week 16.

Quarterback Changes

With so many backup quarterbacks and rookies playing, we’ve seen more line adjustments and a decrease in scoring with the QB changes and carousel impacting games, scoring and quality of play. The number of starting QB’s keeps rising, from 42 just five weeks ago into Week 9, to 54 now. In fact, it will reach 56 this weekend following Easton Stick’s start Thursday for the Chargers and Nick Mullens starting for for the Vikings Saturday.

Of the 32 teams in the league, 16 have used multiple starting quarterbacks. In total, there have been 38 starting quarterback changes with the Browns leading the way with four different starting quarterback’s.

There was an NFL-record 68 different starting quarterbacks last season.

How to use Lookahead Lines

Advance NFL lookahead lines provide a sneak peak at the projected lines for the following week’s games. This advance information from top sportsbooks like the SuperBook provides lessons in understanding lines and projections before the current week’s games are played.

The tendencies for many bettors is to over-react to previous weeks’ scores and results. The lookahead lines provide a sense of stability from the linemaker, who is unbiased in setting the lines in advance without the information from the current week’s contests.

Bettors can also gain an edge or find value in the lines once the current week’s lines are released. They do this based on not only a potential over-reaction to the recent week’s results, but by using information they have on teams including power rankings. Making adjustments is part of the process, along with formulating an opinion on certain teams. This can be based on personnel, injuries, situations and stats that come to light as the season progresses.

As you become more astute in your evaluations, betting and handicapping, you’ll be able to use your skills to project and time the market better and make more +EV bets ahead of market moves.
