The Memorial Tournament Tees Off June Golf With Top Golfers Bet

June tees off with the Memorial Tournament at Jack’s Place. Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack Nicklaus. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Nearly 50 years later, it’s one of the premier golf tournaments on the PGA Tour.

Tight lies and tight time this week, so check out the Memorial Tournament course preview at TheLines, where I contribute to the sports betting stories and news you can use and bet on.

Memorial Tournament Odds 2022

Seven of the top-10 players in the world tee it up, including recent Memorial winners Patrick Cantlay (2021, 2019) and Jon Rahm (2020). Also, Collin Morikawa won the Workday event at Muirfield Village in 2020 in a playoff over Justin Thomas, who is not playing this week. Other top 10 players include Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. No 11 Xander Schauffele and No. 12 Hideki Matsuyama add to the strong field, while 2018 winner Bryson DeChambeau is back trying to play after injuries, and he’s fallen to No. 24 in the world rankings after starting the year at No. 5.

FYI – Zalatoris ranks No. 119 out of 120 players in the field this week in Putting on bentgrass. He’s not a good bet at lower odds for even top finishing position. Unfortunately, cannot locate him in match-ups of interest.  Will Z. missed the cut last week off the major letdown and playoff defeat at the PGA Championship, where we got royally scr$%# in the outright win market on Pereira and Zalators, but won our tournament match-up to improve to 13-6 this year on posted match-ups. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a very sub-par performance from Zalatoris again.

Key Stats

Approach play stats are still more significant than driving stats at Muirfield Village. Key stats from Fantasy National as researched and provided.

  • Strokes Gained: Around the Green
  • Strokes Gained: Approach and Ball Striking
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (on bentgrass)
  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green
  • Par-4 Scoring (focus 400-450 yards)
  • Proximity to Hole (150-175 yards)

Making birdies on Par 5’s is where scoring is made at Muirfield, and the SG: Par 5s over their last 50 rounds are DeChambeau, Cantlay, Smith, Fitzpatrick and Homa.

Memorial Tournament Picks

Fairway’s Favorites: McIlroy, Cantlay, Schauffele, Fitzpatrick
Fairway’s Longshots: Homa, Pereira, Rodgers, Wise

Tournament Match-ups:  Billy Horschel (+120) over Keegan Bradley. (Caesars)

Can’t get more tournament match-ups of interest, and we’ll add a Round 1 match-up below. A little tepid on Horschel’s form, but Bradley is one of the worst Putters in field on bentgrass. He’s even worse on Short Game and Around the Green stats. Bradley is a risk laying a pretty big price, and if his irons and approach are off a bit, he may well miss the cut. Regular play.

Schauffele is well thought of laying -145 vs Spieth, but we’ll pass. Same with Fitzpatrick laying -150 vs Matsuyama. Looking for others, and check back for other Round-by-Round match-ups.

Round 1 bet – Patrick Rodgers (+100) over Troy Merritt (Caesars). They both tee off in the first two groups in the morning.

McIlroy (-140) to finish Top 20 (Stations)

We passed last week, and enter the Memorial Tournament 13-6 on tournament match-ups in 2022. We lost our match-up in this event in 2021, but went 3-0 in 2020 with a focus on Xander Schauffele. Let’s try to make birdie and shoot for more winners.

Next week it’s the Canadian Open, followed by the U.S. Open on Father’s Day weekend.

Post Tournament update: Billy Horschel (-13) wins Memorial by 4-strokes over Aaron Wise, and easily cashes our tournament match-up winner. Posted tournament match-ups now 14-6 year-to-date. Our Round 1 match-up pushed, but Rory McIlroy cashed in a top-20 finish despite shooting a 5-over 41 on the front 9 in Sunday’s final round.
