Michigan State QB Andrew Maxwell Named Starter

Michigan State Sophomore QB Connor Cook to also get a look in Friday’s opener

Andrew Maxwell

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio has finally come to a decision on the starting quarterback position for his Spartans. Senior Andrew Maxwell has been named the starter for the opener against Western Michigan on Friday, August 30th in East Lansing. The Spartans are a prohibitive 28 point favorite with the lowest posted total on opening week at 44.5.

Sophomore Connor Cook, who was in competition with Maxwell, will also see playing time during the game. Maxwell started 12 games last season but was not consistent while throwing for was 2,606 yards, 13 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions. The Spartans offense produced 17 or less points in seven games last season while going 7-6 with a bowl win over TCU 17-16. Yet note that the Spartans offensive line suffered numerous early season injuries and the offense was not able to meet productive expectations. Maxwell should improve on his numbers and production if he can stay healthy and hold onto the starting job.

Still, laying 28 points in the opener is risky, even with a dominating Spartans defense that will be one of the Big Ten’s best this season. Western Michigan is expected to struggle on offense as the Spartans defense looks very strong again this season led by a pair of top senior linebackers.

Coach Dantonio noted that Maxwell is more familiar with the MSU system and said “He’s competitive, has got great leadership skills.”

Strong QB play is essential for the Spartans this season if they want to improve on seven wins. Yet a favorable schedule through October could have the Spartans with 6 or 7 wins in what appears to be a slightly improved Big Ten Conference following last season’s weak showing for the conference overall. Michigan State avoids Ohio State and Wisconsin out of the Leaders division this season which should allow them to push for a double-digit win season and contend for the Legends division title.
