McIlroy And DJ Are TaylorMade For Skins Event

Golfs Greats Rory McIlroy And Dustin Johnson Big Favorites In TaylorMade Skins Match Over Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff

The sites and sounds will be worth watching as live golf returns May 17. It’s not a PGA Tournament, but a skins match to raise money for COVID-19 relief efforts. The money at stake makes the match more intriguing. So does the exclusive Seminole golf course in Florida that few fans ever get to see. I cover some of the wagering and props opportunities and update the odds of the TaylorMade Driving Relief match in my article at Forbes. Are Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson worth a bet as big favorites versus Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in this skins match?

  • Date: Sunday May 17, 2020
  • TV-Time: NBC, Golf Channel, 2:00 p.m. ET
  • Venue: Seminole Golf Club
  • Location: Juno Beach, Florida
  • Odds: McIlroy/Johnson (-180) vs Fowler/Wolff (+160)

The Donald Ross-designed Seminole Golf Club deserves headlines as well. It’s one of America’s most revered courses built on open land right alongside the Atlantic Ocean.

One sided as it seems with a pair of modern stars both ranked No. 1 in the world for a combined four years over the past decade, it’s the upstart underdogs that are taking more money. Fowler/Wolff have attracted 72% of the total number of tickets as well as 65% of the total dollars wagered into Friday at William Hill Sportsbook, Other leading sportsbooks in major markets Nevada and New Jersey have also taken more money on the less heralded underdogs.

“We’ve seen some underdog support so far,” Westgate SuperBook vice president of risk Jeff Sherman told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “A lot of people think this formula lends itself to being somewhat equated.”

Golfer and Teams DraftKings FanDuel BetAmerica William  Hill Circa SuperBook
R. McIlroy / D. Johnson -175 -180 -200 -180 -180 -170
R. Fowler / M. Wolff 138 146 145 160 155 150

I’ve not bet it, as there is too much uncertainty and unknown. But while I would bet the favorite in next week’s Legends skins match of Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning over Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, this one has less to like laying the lumber with Fowler sporting the stronger putting and iron game while McIlroy and Johnson have also been completely out of golf with even little preparation for this fundraising and Driving Relief event. The skins breakdown by holes with carryovers and more money building will add to the intrigue of the event.

  • First 6 holes: $50,000 each
  • Holes 7-16: $100,000 each
  • Hole 17: $200,000
  • Hole 18: $500,000

I could see betting on McIlroy and DJ to be leading after the first three holes (-137), or betting a chip-in prop that is listed in the skins match article at Forbes. But this made for TV match-up is worth watching for pure entertainment and fun with money raised going towards COVID-19 relief efforts and a good cause.

You can bet on it.
