Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and Auburn coach Gus Malzahn spoke at the SEC Championship press conference Friday and you can read their statements and quotes in the links provided.

Unlikely SEC championship participants as these two teams combined for two (2) conference wins last season and were 50-1 and 60-1 to win the SEC championship @LVSuperBook in Las Vegas prior to the season.

SEC ChampionshipAuburn has gone from a 2.5-point favorite to a 1-point underdog as big bettors have lined up on Missouri later in the week in anticipation of a Tigers win.  But which Tiger will claw the other in this battle of heavyweights in the SEC?  Auburn is off their big upset of #1 Alabama last week. our Top Play Rivalry GOY winner as big ‘Dog and now the Tigers travel off back-to-back big, emotional wins to tackle a strong and balanced Missouri team on both sides of the ball.  It’s certainly been a remarkable run for Auburn, as they have been one of the great surprises and stories of the college football season. The Tigers have also been a huge profit-producer for their betting backers going 10-2 ATS.  But also on the rebound this year is Missouri, as these Tigers have been very consistent and balanced week after week in the rugged SEC.

Both teams average 35 PPG and 460 YPG at 6.5 yards per play on offense in SEC play.  But Auburn’s explosive offense under offensive guru and Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn led the SEC in rushing this season with 286 YPG, 5.7 YPR and a league-high 404 rushing attempts in eight games ( 50/game ).  The Tigers ran the ball 52 times for 296 yards on Alabama’s #1 rush defense last week in victory. Now Auburn must regroup for the Missouri Tigers now #1 rush defense allowing 120 rushing YPG and league-low 3.5 YPR.  Missouri’s attacking defensive front is one of the best in the nation and the Tigers led the SEC in sacks (29) and opponent 3rd down conversions (34%).  Missouri does a lot of slanting and their linebackers fill the gaps to stuff the run.  Theeir strong defense helped lead the Tigers to the league’s best turnover margin in league play (+11) and the offense had the fewest giveaways; just six in eight games.

Missouri enters on a 4-0 SU/ATS run following last week’s 28-21 win over Texas A&M.  That victory moved them to 4-0 ATS in their last four SEC games and 6-1 ATS their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning record. Missouri held the Aggies #1 offense to just 379 yards offense; 135 yards below their average. Missouri has the superior defense in this match-up allowing 378 YPG and 5.1 yards per play to Auburn’s 458 YPG defense and 6.3 yards per play.  Auburn’s bend but don’t break defense has been their best in the red zone, but they have one of the league’s worst pass defense allowing 274 passing YPG and over 8.0 yards per pass, so Missouri QBs James Franklin or Maty Mauk should take advantage, as each passes for over 8.0 yards per pass play.

With a strong, balanced offense averaging 224 rushing YPG and 235 passing YPG vs. SEC opponents, and the superior defense, you can see why Missouri is taking the money with a likely letdown for Auburn also anticipated as they can’t be expected to be their best or at peak performance with efficient production.  Missouri’s defense showed their teeth again last week against a top-tier Texas A&M offense. While the stats on offense suggest scoring, I believe the situation and championship game pressure could come into play as the winner could get a shot at the national title game.  Missouri’s strong defense has led to a 4-1 under the total run their last five games.  They should slow Auburn’s more one-dimensional attack enough to keep their scoring down, making under the total worthy of a smaller wager.
