Longshot Varner Leads Spieth By 1-Shot Through 36 Holes. DeChambeau, McIlroy, Schauffele and Thomas Top Contenders

The leaderboard is stacked with some of the games top-ranked golfers, but it’s a 200-1 longshot Harold Varner III that is proving there is justice for an opportunity to compete.

Betting on golf has been in abundance in the PGA’s return to action, and the weekend wagering for in-game, match-ups and adjusted odds to win will be a birdie for bookmakers. And bettors too if local resident Jordan Spieth can emerge with a victory.

“The handle has been really good. Expecting live betting over the weekend to be heavily bet,” William Hill Director of Trading told me Friday.

Spieth (-10) trails Varner by one shot through 36 holes, but the leaderboard is loaded.

In the outright market, bookmakers are going to get hit hard if Jordan Spieth wins, as he was a popular player at odds as high as +5000 (50-1) at William Hill.

“Spieth is a big loser for the house,” Bogdanovich said. A win by Varner, Rose or DeChambeau would be a small loser for William Hill.

Bettors will look back to this three putt from three feet for Spieth on Friday’s third hole if he loses out in a close decision.

Bogdanovich said the biggest decisions for pre-tournament match-ups at William Hill that bettors supported were Knox (+6) over Watson (-6) and Fowler (+2) over Reed (-3). Chalk up birdies on the scorecard for the bookmaker and bogey’s for the bettors.

“Match-ups figure to be heavily bet with such a star-studded leaderboard,” Bogdanovich added.
